Course Objectives

The course will introduce students to the study of mind and behavior, by providing the critical, historical, and methodological foundations needed to frame psychology as a scientific discipline.
This knowledge contributes to training to work effectively as professionals in the physical exercise, wellness, and sports sectors.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- understand the features of the different theoretical approaches in psychology;
- elaborate and integrate knowledge into the workings of the mind and behavior;
- interpret experimental protocols used for the study of mind and behavior;
- communicate in a clear and unambiguous way their knowledge of human behavior;
- deepen topics of interest in their own way.

Course Prerequisites

The proposed program will allow students who have not previously acquired disciplinary knowledge to achieve the indicated educational objectives. There are therefore no prerequisites, but supplementary readings may be recommended.

Teaching Methods

The lectures make use of slides and concern theoretical aspects of the discipline integrated by practical examples of the main experimental paradigms.

Assessment Methods

The "General (and developmental) Psychology" exam (one of the three courses of PSYCHO-SOCIAL BASES AND PEDAGOGY OF SPORT) will be a multiple-choice test.
The test will be aimed at verifying the learning process, the property of language, and the ability to interpret, synthesize, and analyze psychological phenomena. The test will be modulated on a battery of 10 questions of equal weight for a maximum total time of 10 minutes: the questions will concern the various thematic areas of the program. The score of the written test is calculated considering only the correct answers (1 point for each correct answer). The written test will be considered passed if the grade is at least 6/10.
To achieve the passing of PSYCHO-SOCIAL BASES AND PEDAGOGY OF SPORT, the candidate must obtain a score of at least 6/10 in each individual exam taken for each of the three modules. Once the three courses have been passed, the overall mark of the PSYCHO-SOCIAL BASES AND PEDAGOGY OF SPORT course will be calculated by adding the scores obtained to the individual modules.

The course contributes to the educational aims of the current curricula by providing the theoretical basis and technical skills in the study of basic cognitive processes in the lifespan in relation to physical, motor, and sports activity. Particular attention will be paid to the study of the cognitive functions and individual differences that contribute to the correct development and acquisition of the motor behaviors necessary in sports and daily activities. Among these:
- Visuo-spatial and visuo-motor coordination;
- Procedural memory;
- Social development and role in team sports;
- Human communication;
- Motivation;
- Emotional regulation.
