Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the students with the tools for the analysis and the interpretation of the governance and strategic management models of firms. In particular, this purpose is linked to the following learning outcomes: Knowledge and ability to understand – the course aims to provide knowledge and comprehension related to the basic concepts and scientific language for business strategy. This knowledge and competences are obtained through the participation at the lessons and seminars with corporate executives, organized during the course, and through the individual, autonomous, and guided study. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding – the course aims to support the advancement of strategic interpretation of business concepts. This outcome is pursued through an educational approach aimed at analyzing prearranged themes, related to the analysis and the strategic management of firms. The ability to apply knowledge and understanding is demonstrated through a critical reflection of the students on the contents of textbooks; it is urged by the lessons; it is supported by the study of business cases, explained by the professor, entrepreneurs, and professionals, who hold organized seminars.

Course Prerequisites

It is recommended, for all students, to firstly take the “Economia aziendale” exam.

Teaching Methods

Lectures. Presentation and discussion of business cases.

Assessment Methods

Knowledge and ability to understand – the formative effectiveness of the course is verified through a preliminary written test and a final interview. The written exam is composed of a number of questions equal to a number of credits allocated that the students have to obtain. The questions concern general theme and intend to verify the capabilities of the students to briefly articulate the principal aspects of the considered subject matter. The final interview consists of questions to analyze some of the issues of the course program (including the themes of the written exam) to verify the student's capability to examine specific aspects. The final evaluation takes into account the results of both the written and oral tests. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding – During the oral test, the professor verifies the capability of the students to apply the acquired knowledge on business strategy themes and on business cases explained in the lectures, selected from a current economic context, analyzed in the seminars, and deepened in the individual study.

Contents

The course describes and examines the main set of problems related to the strategic analysis and management of firms. Particularly, the course analyzes: the general concept of strategy; the analysis of strategic positioning and the tools for the strategic analysis; the set of problems related to the definition and realization of competitive and corporate strategies of firms; the strategic management; the concept of the business model and its evolution with reference to the issues of sustainability and innovation.
