Course Objectives


The course contributes to the achievement of the educational objectives of the Degree Program by providing students with theoretical knowledge and fundamental methodological tools to understand and analyze the main themes of the relevant discipline. Specifically, students must achieve: - in-depth knowledge of the methodological tools that allow them to scientifically address the analysis of texts and authors who have problematized issues of the philosophical-political tradition; - Knowledge of the main currents in modern political philosophy - Ability to analyze and problematize Spinoza's political conception in the transition from TTP to TP - Ability to critically read philosophical texts - Ability to present, explore, and discuss, in a critical and original manner, the main themes of modern political philosophy in light of the problems and aspects of contemporary life

Teaching Methods


Course is delivered in person and involve the integrated use of various teaching methods, selected consistently with the expected learning outcomes. Specifically, the teaching program is structured as follows: Classroom lectures, aimed at conveying theoretical content, systematizing key concepts, and acquiring disciplinary language, as well as developing transversal skills such as collaboration, independent judgment, and communication skills. Seminars, with external instructors or industry experts, aimed at exploring specific topics or case studies. Attendance is not mandatory, but is strongly recommended, as active participation in the various teaching activities significantly contributes to the achievement of the course's learning objectives.

Assessment Methods


The exam consists of an oral test, designed to assess learning, conceptual mastery, language skills, and interpretation and analysis skills. The exam lasts approximately 20 minutes. The exam will be graded with a score between 0 and 30 (with possible honors). A score of 18 to 23 indicates sufficient learning, a score of 23 to 28 indicates good learning, a score of 28 to 30 indicates excellent learning, and a score of "with honors" indicates outstanding analytical and critical reasoning skills in the course topics.

ATTENDING students will bring the following texts:
1. Spinoza, Theological-Political Treatise (chapters 16-20)
2. Spinoza, Politics Both texts will be translated by F. Mignini and O. Proietti, in Opere, Mondadori, Milan 2007, pp. 670-735 and pp. 1107-1217, respectively.
3. An essay (article, book chapter, etc.) in a foreign language, chosen from those proposed during the course, to be presented in class.
NON-ATTENDING students, in addition to the above texts, will bring ONE of the following texts:

The political thought of Spinoza and of various modern authors and currents; the relationship between anthropology and politics; the theme of pactum; the problem of the origins of civil society; the contribution of reason and passion to the constitution of civil society; the concepts of "good," "useful," and "happiness" in their various socio-political declinations
