Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims at providing advanced knowledge on clinical neuropsychology, with a focus on neuropsychological assessment, by developing critical thought in both theoretical and methodological domain and providing the crucial cognitive instruments for a productive integration within multidisciplinary équipes. The module contributes to the fulfillment of the educational goals of the Clinical and Health Psychology Master Degree, by providing the instruments for the comprehension of the mind-brain-behavior relationship in atypical populations, which suffered brain injuries. The student will have to demonstrate the acquisition of: 1) knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and methodological bases of the discipline; 2) knowledge and understanding of the neuropsychological deficits included in the course programme; 3) knowledge and understanding of the methodological and ethical foundations of neuropsychological assessment; 4) knowledge and understanding of the assessment methods of the neuropsychological disorders included in the course programme; 5) ability of linking and integrating knowledge; 6) ability of communicating knowledge in a clear way and through a disciplinary lexicon.

Course Prerequisites

The course expects students to already have a basic knowledge of psychobiology.

Teaching Methods

The course is delivered through lectures, using Power Point slides (provided to students), vision and discussion on clinical cases, and demonstrations on the use of neuropsychological assessment tools. Attendance is optional but strongly recommended.

Assessment Methods

Written examination with multiple-choice and open questions. During the course, exercises will be carried out on the correction and interpretation of the neuropsychological tests illustrated in the lecture. Examination topics will reflect those in the syllabus and questions will be designed to require integration of the knowledge learnt and critical reflection on it. Thus, the examination will not only test knowledge and understanding of the individual topics in the syllabus but will also test the competences mentioned above (cf. Learning Outcomes).

Contents

The course provides knowledge and skills in the area of assessment or evaluation in clinical neuropsychology. After a brief introduction to the theoretical and methodological foundations of neuropsychology, the course will present the clinical symptoms and theoretical interpretations of the main disorders resulting from acquired brain injury in adults, with a specific focus on assessment methods (clinical interview and standardized tests). By training critical thinking in both theoretical and applied fields, the course provides the necessary tools for successful integration into multidisciplinary clinical teams.
