Course Objectives

Instruction in Filologia classica contributes, by means of the study of the transmission of ancient texts and their critical editions, of which an exemplary case is investigated, to the the wider task of the course of study in Filologia linguistica e tradizioni letterarie to bring students nearer to the field of philological research and to a well grounded teaching. The expected learning goals are: • Knowledge of the transmission of the text in the ancient world and of its critical edition, through the most up-to-date instruments; • Skill in linking the general elements with the particular and detailed analysis of an ancient text; • Autonomy in the treating of ancient texts, enabling one also to suggest interventions on the critical structure of the text; • Skill in communicating the contents of this topic through the use of field-specific terms and lexicon.

Course Prerequisites

Good knowledge of both classical languages

Teaching Methods

The course consists in 42 hours of lecturing including various forms of formative and summative assessment.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment consists in one oral examination in which students will demonstrate their acquistion of the class content and the ability to analyze an ancient text. The grade scale goes from 1 to 30 cum laude: 1-17 insufficient, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 cum laude excellent.

1. The trasmission of ancient texts. Papyri, parchments, rolls and codices. Modern critical editions. Practice in reading Greek and Latin documents for a conscious critical edition; 2. History of the tradition and criticism of Philostratus' Gymnasticus
