Course Objectives


The course contributes to the achievement of the educational objectives of the Degree Course in Philology, Linguistics and Literary Traditions, enabling students to learn about and critically evaluate the history of pedagogy, understood as a useful tool for designing educational activities in school and extracurricular contexts.Expected learning outcomes: Knowledge and understanding:At the end of the course, students should:- be familiar with the themes and currents of pedagogical thought, especially in the modern and contemporary age, relating them to the development of economic systems, social structures and political institutions;- understand the terminology and research methods of the history of pedagogy;- understand and be able to explain the relationships between the development of pedagogical ideas and the evolution of educational practices and school systems;- Independent judgement:At the end of the course, students must:- demonstrate competence in the analysis and interpretation of texts on the history of pedagogy.Communication skills:Students will be able to:- clearly present the results of their individual study and research, using the technical language of the discipline.

Course Prerequisites


Knowledge of historical developments from ancient times to the present day.

Teaching Methods


Lectures, laboratory exercises, study seminars, educational visits

Assessment Methods


The final exam consists of an oral exam on the course content.Knowledge of the course content and bibliography, oral expression, critical and methodological skills will be assessed. The score ranges from 1 to 30 with honours, as follows: 1-17 insufficient, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours excellent.

Contents


The course will examine the main issues in modern pedagogy and the decisive stages that have led, particularly since the late nineteenth century, to a shift in thinking about the aims of education from its original philosophical context to the development of the educational sciences. The reconstruction will shed light in particular on the links that, against the backdrop of social change, connect the main ideas about education to the most influential currents in modern and contemporary culture. The impact of the main pedagogical theories that developed between the 19th and 20th centuries on educational and school practices will also be considered. In particular, attention will be paid to the pedagogical theory of Maria Montessori, investigated in its relationship with pedagogical activism, political commitment and pacifism.
