Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course will contribute to achieving the learning objectives of the Degree Course in Philology, linguistics and literary traditions. It aims to train the students translation skills and to foster reflection on the phonetic, morphological and syntactic peculiarities of the text.

• KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING: to consolidate and acquire grammatical, syntactic and lexical skills;
• AUTONOMY: to acquire clear independence in the analysis and translation of ancient Greek texts.
•COMMUNICATION SKILLS: to acquire sufficient skills to expound, communicate and explain linguistic phenomena and problems with appropriate terminology.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the grammatical structures of the Greek language.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons and exercises.

Assessment Methods

The written exam consists of translation of a Greek text into Italian.
Assessment is by a final score (e.g. sufficient, fair, good, very good, excellent). Pass mark: 18l.

Texts

The Greek texts used for the exercises and all the study material connected with the topics discussed in class will be provided by Prof. Di Marzio.

Contents

The workshop will focus on the practice of translating texts at increasing levels of difficulty. The translation of the text will be the starting point to explore phonetic, morphological and syntactical issues.

Given the ‘workshop’ nature of the course, attendance is not obligatory but is recommended.
The exam will be the same for both attending and non-attending students.
