Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to facilitate the development of knowledge and resources that enable tourism destination managers to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage for the entire destination and its tourism businesses. The course content aims to introduce students to and understand the characteristics of the main management strategies in the tourism sector at the destination level, especially from a sustainability perspective, in relation to different competitive environments. The course provides students with the analytical tools to understand the origins of this competitive advantage and the management processes required to achieve it.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the Tourism Geography modules is a prerequisite for this module.
Knowledge of the first two modules on tourism models is essential.

Teaching Methods

Student assessment involves an oral exam in the form of a discussion, starting with a question related to the topics covered and encouraging logical connections with other topics and concrete examples. Students must demonstrate their ability to interpret phenomena that are relevant at the territorial level and in relation to regional, national, and international networks, and their ability to assess the main determinants, issues, and the deployment of stakeholders' interests in the diverse and complex areas of territorial policy.

Assessment Methods

Knowledge and Understanding. Students will acquire knowledge of the fundamental concepts of tourism destination management and will learn to understand the key mechanisms underlying strategic choices in the development of a tourism destination.
Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding. Students will develop their ability to apply the theoretical concepts and models presented during the course and to critically reason about the assumptions underlying these concepts, highlighting their applicability.
Ability to Make Independent Judgments. Students will learn to critically compare alternative explanations for phenomena related to tourism destination management and to develop their own analyses and solutions to the case studies presented in class.
Learning Skills. The course will enhance students' ability to critically use the theoretical models of tourism destination competitiveness presented, and to seek additional readings and empirical insights.
