Course Objectives

Providing basic knowledge on the cognitive neurosciences useful to be applied critically to inclusive design.
At the end of the Cognitive Neuroscience for Design teaching module, the student will be able to:
- Envisage the design of a product within a conceptual framework relating to the functioning of the brain and the cognitive system (sensation, perception, attention, action, memory, emotion, thought and decision, language).
- Analyze design problems in interdisciplinary terms.
- Collect and analyze experimental data, and return a functional interpretation to the design problem.
- Apply the knowledge acquired in specific design contexts, with particular reference to inclusion.

Course Prerequisites

The teaching of Cognitive Neuroscience for Design is a module of the Inclusive Product Design Laboratory. Therefore, the prerequisites indicated for the aforementioned Laboratory apply.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and activities in small groups.

Assessment Methods

The assessment of the students' preparation will be carried out through an oral interview covering both the theoretical and applied parts.
The final grade will be expressed in thirtieths. The topics covered in the exam will reflect those covered during the teaching and present in the program.

Materials provided by the instructors.

Contents

The course aims to explore the potential of cognitive and affective neuroscience as a theoretical and methodological resource for design in the different fields of design (product design, experience design, interaction design, service design, etc.) with particular attention to inclusive design. The teaching aims to provide students with tools to understand how the human mind perceives, interprets and reacts to artifacts, environments and interactions, promoting a more conscious, empathetic and evidence-based design.

Course Language
