Syllabus

Course Objectives

Physiology is an integrative science that studies the functioning of life processes at many levels of complexity: from cells, to organs to systems, to the body as a whole. This course represents the natural continuation (and completion) of the Human Physiology course of the Bachelor's Degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences.
The main objective of this course is to provide an integrated vision of how the different systems and organs that make up the human body function not independently of each other, but in an integrated and coordinated manner within the whole organism, thanks to short and long distance communications.
Particular attention and in-depth analysis will therefore be dedicated to the nervous system (special senses and motor control. A section of the course will also be dedicated to the adaptation of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and respiratory systems to physical exercise.

Course Prerequisites

Physiology is an integrative science which, in order to be followed and learned successfully in class (and successfully studied for passing the exam), requires the student to have acquired knowledge of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Histology and Anatomy.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is structured in 24 hours of frontal teaching Lessons will be combined into 8 lessons of 3 hours each according to the didactic calendar the lectures will be supported by the projection of slides (prepared by the teacher) and by animations related to the topics covered.
Attendance is recommended, but in any case optional, with the exam that will be the same for those attending classes and not.

Assessment Methods

The verification of the students' preparation will take place through an exam that will focus exclusively on the topics covered in the lectures (and listed in detail in the extended program; see below).

The exam will consist of a written test.
The written exam will last 60 minutes and will consist of 31 multiple choice questions (with only one correct answer) and open questions. The total points of the written test will be 31 (1 points for each correct answer; 0 points for each wrong answer). To pass the exam, the student must have correctly answered 18 out of 31 questions.
The final grade of the exam will be determined by the weighted average between physiology and anatomy.

Texts

The student will be able to find and deepen the topics covered in class (see extended program; below) in various books on Human Physiology, Neurophysiology, and Physiology Applied to Sport on the market. Here are some of the texts the student could choose from:

1. Human Physiology (or Physiology): an integrated approach; author: Dee Unglaub Silverthorn.
2. Human Physiology: from cells to systems; author: Lauralee Sherwood.
3. Fundamentals of Human Physiology; author: Lauralee Sherwood.
4. Physiology; author; author: Cindy L. Stanfield.
5. Vander Physiology; authors: Eric P. Widmaier, Hershel Raff, Kevin T. Strang.
6. Physiology Applied to Sport; authors William D. McArdle, Frank I. Katch, Victor L. Katch.
7. Neuroscience; authors: Dale Purves, George J. Augustine, David Fitzpatrick, William C. Hall, Anthony-Samuel Lamantia, Leonard E. White.
