Course Objectives

Training objectives:
The course will provide students with methodological notions aimed at the structural understanding of French literary history, as well as a picture of the cultural heritage of French literary civilisation from the Middle Ages to 1715. Through the chronological study of an anthological selection of significant texts from the historical-literary period in the program, by means of an in-depth study of some classic texts and with the help of manual readings, students will acquire a complete picture of the relevant dynamics in the field of genres, movements and currents, of ideas and of the historical-social phenomena connected to them. It will also provide theoretical, methodological and terminological tools necessary for the literary and linguistic analysis of the texts.
The course will also focus on a predominant period of French literary civilisation, the Seventeenth Century, which codifies the language and affirms various literary movements that contribute to the richness of the Grand Siècle. The specific object of analysis will be two particularly significant works from the second half of the 17th century through which the season of classical moralism will be illustrated.

Expected learning outcomes:
Within the three-year period, the course represents a first step in the development of awareness of the philological-literary context of the French language, both from a diachronic (literary history) and synchronic point of view (introduction to textual analysis and interpretation of texts).

Knowledge and understanding abilities:

knowledge and understanding of the fundamental manifestations of the French literary heritage of the reference period (from its origins to 1715);
a thorough knowledge of the seventeenthcentury and its historical, linguistic and cultural context;
ability to understand the Frenchlanguage literary texts of the stated period.

Autonomous thinking:

ability to describe and interpret literary texts from the stated period;
ability to reformulate the issues related to the social and historicalcultural contexts analysed in the period of reference.

Communication skills:

the ability to present, orally and in view of the textual types and literary genres, content and information relating to French literature of the given period.

Course Prerequisites

Good general culture with particular attention to the main turning points of medieval and modern history. Knowledge of the essential characteristics of Italian literature from its origins to the eighteenth century. Good understanding and good written and oral expression.

Teaching Methods

The course is semi-annual and is structured in 48 hours of lectures, divided into lessons of 1 or 2 hours according to the timetable. The course will be held in such a way as to stimulate the involvement of students, especially in the analysis and interpretation of texts.

Assessment Methods

The assessment will take place through a final oral exam in Italian, with a mark in thirtieths, which will evaluate the knowledge of the topics covered in the course and the clarity of the student’s exposition. The student’s ability to return a critical reading of the literary texts examined will be also assessed. To this end, a request will be made to comment on one of the planned anthological pieces and to frame it in the historical-literary context, and to report on the analysis of the literary works in the program.
