Syllabus

Course Objectives


1) Upon completion of the course, the student will have acquired basic knowledge related to: 1. historical Romance linguistics; 2. the history of medieval Romance literatures; 3. cultural-historical framing of the period of Romance origins. He/she will also be able to read medieval texts and translate from at least one medieval Romance language recognizing its main phonomorphological and syntactic features.
2) Applied knowledge and autonomy of judgment: by the end of the course, the student will be able to establish simple connections between Romance languages and literatures; he/she will have refined linguistic and literary skills in a Romance language and will be able to independently formulate and support complex arguments and commentaries on texts, including those new to the course.
3) Communicative skills: at the end of the course, the student will be able to communicate and share information, problems and solutions in a congruent vocabulary and in a clear manner; he/she will also be able to communicate ideas and formulate hypotheses with a specialized and up-to-date vocabulary.
4) Learning skills: by the end of the course the student will have developed the autonomy to move among the basic tools and will be able to navigate the specialized bibliography and dictionaries.

Basic knowledge of the Latin language

Basic knowledge of the geography of Europe

Lectures, reading exercises from medieval manuscripts

Assessment Methods


The final assessment consists of a written test (optional) and an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess students’ skills and in particular, an understanding of the issues discussed during the course, an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography in the course programme, a correct command of the specific language as well as critical and methodological abilities will be evaluated. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.

Contents


The course will focus on the Romance languages, their genesis, diffusion
and distribution over the centuries; the earliest
documents attesting to the emergence of the Neo-Latin languages in the medieval period
and later the first literary texts elaborated in the vernacular language
will be analyzed. It will study the main phenomena of historical grammar that
concerned the first phase of evolution from Latin to the Romance languages
and will go more specifically into the study of the phonetic and
morphosyntactic phenomena of the d'oil language. The course will include an in-depth
literary study of the Roman de Renart, a collection of texts composed between the late
12th and mid-13th centuries in northern France.
