Syllabus

Course Objectives

Allow the student to be able of rapidly recognize, describe with sufficient detail and adequate technical language, and correctly classify according to international standards the sedimentary, magmatic and metamorphic rocks by mesoscopic rock analysis.

Course Prerequisites

No restrictions

Teaching Methods

Taught class in laboratory. Independent and group work of the student, aided and verified by the teacher.

Assessment Methods

During the course, the learning level is verified by testing the ability of each single student in describing and classifying rocks. The final test consists of a short written test (multiple-choice questionnaire) followed by oral exam consisting in mesoscopic recognition, description and classification of sedimentary, magmatic and metamorphic rock samples (in general, at least six

Texts

- General introduction: F. Press e R. Siever - Capire la Terra, edizione italiana a cura di E. Lupia Palmieri e M. Parotto, Zanichelli; - Sedimentary rocks: Bosellini A., Mutti E. e Ricci Lucchi F. – Rocce e successioni sedimentarie, UTET; - Teaching material made available via the e-learning platform.

Contents

Practical laboratory activity on mesoscopic rock samples aimed at recognizing, describing and classifying sedimentary (terrigenous siliciclastic, carbonate, evaporitic, siliceous, residual, hydrocarbons and coals), magmatic (intrusive and extrusive) and metamorphic rocks. The recognition is done by naked eye, with the aid of simple tools such as geologist hummer and lens, steel pick, ruler, diluted hydrochloric acid, water. The recognition and classification of the different types of sedimentary rocks is preceded by theoretical lessons on classification criteria and schemes according to the most common international geologic practice.

Course Language

Italian
