Syllabus

Course Objectives


The main aim of the course is to provide students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to analyze seismotectonic processes through the integrated use of geological, seismological, geophysical, and geodetic data. The course is aimed at developing the ability to use seismological, geophysical, and signal analysis tools to:
- build and validate seismotectonic models;
- assess seismic hazard and local seismic response;
- interpret the deformational evolution of active structures.
The multidisciplinary integration of data enables students to acquire a quantitative and critical understanding of active crustal dynamics and their relevance to territorial planning and risk mitigation.

Assessment Methods


The examination process may take place at different times and in various formats, at the student’s choice:
1-DURING THE COURSE: written midterm exams with multiple-choice questions;
2-AT THE END OF THE COURSE: final oral examination and submission of a written report

1) Analysis of active and passive seismic signals, both natural and anthropogenic;
2) Processing of seismological data for the calculation of earthquake locations, focal mechanisms, and magnitudes;
3) Definition and characterization of the crustal structure using tomographic methods;
4) Statistical analysis of seismic catalogs;
5) Calculation of deformation fields;
6) Calculation of stress fields;
7) Integration of seismological, geophysical, geological, and geodetic data for the definition of seismotectonic provinces and individual seismic sources.

Students:
1) will have access to the “Seismology and Geophysics Laboratory for Seismotectonics and Territorial Applications” at Ud’A;
2) may undertake internships at Italian geophysical institutes or other universities affiliated with CRUST (Interuniversity Center for 3D Seismotectonics with Territorial Applications);
3) may develop interdisciplinary theses also within the framework of CRUST;
4) will be able to use two additional weekly hours, beyond the scheduled class time, for further clarification or to review more complex topics.
