Obiettivi
IN ITALIANO:
IN ENGLISH:
The educational objective of the Master of Planetary Sciences degree is to provide students with knowledge and skill to become experts in the analysis and interpretation of planetary mission data, organization of space missions, definition of scientific objectives for the exploration of the Solar System, and definition of requirements and development of scientific instrumentation and experiments. The interdisciplinary nature of the Master of Planetary Sciences degree program focuses on the geological, geophysical, mineralogical, and physical processes of planets, includ-ing the Earth, natural satellites, and other bodies such as meteorites, asteroids, and dwarf planets in the Solar System.
Understanding the formation of the Solar System and its evolution and the processes that pro-duced and continue to affect the Earth, other planets and associated planetary systems has both observational, including experimental, and theoretical aspects. Observational planetary science includes remote sens-ing data, including data from terrestrial ground observations and space missions as well as ter-restrial fieldwork for both Earth specific processes and terrestrial analogues to planetary pro-cesses. Courses include field geological surveying so students can learn about both terrestrial processes and processes analogous to planetary processes. In addition, experimental course-work allows the study of terrestrial/planetary processes, the results of which can provide infor-mation both on the observables expected from space missions and theoretical work. Theoretical planetary science uses modelling to study and investigate various terrestrial and planetary phe-nomena while using observational and experimental data as inputs into modelling. Coursework includes training on how to do data processing, analyses, and modelling to study and investigate various terrestrial and planetary phenomena.
The educational program is designed to have a group of courses dedicated to providing the students with a strong foundation in planetary sciences, while a second group of courses will provide a more advanced topics in planetary sciences. This master's program has an interdisciplinary teaching staff with diverse backgrounds in geology, geophysics, minerology, and astrophysics as well as direct participation in terrestrial analogue fieldwork projects, and current and upcoming space missions in the Solar System. Students will benefit by gaining experience in Earth and planetary science projects and space missions. In addition, the program provides the students with an opportunity to do internships and independent research. Students will also learn methods to effectively communicate scientific results to the scientific community and the professional world. The knowledge and experience gained during the course will allow the graduate in Planetary Sciences to have the knowledge and skillset to pursue a career path in academia, research institutes, national and international space agencies, and industry for both the Earth and extra-terrestrial bodies.

Autonomia di giudizi
IN ITALIANO:
IN ENGLISH:
As this course is inherently interdisciplinary in both its focus and mode of teaching, it is crucial that students learn to properly discern the geological, geophysical, physical, and mineralogical processes that guide the origin and evolution of the Solar System. Students will acquire the ability to judge, integrate and interpret information from multiple sources in a coherent manner using the scientific method. The scientific method teaches students to make logical inferences about natural phenomena and iteratively testing these inferences against data obtained from observations, experiments, fieldwork, and modelling. Students will learn to gather and interpret data from multiple sources, integrating and critiquing evidence so that the student can properly interpret the data. Students must also be open to update and even change interpretations based on new observations and/or tests using new experiments or modelling. The skillsets thus obtained will be assessed through exercises and oral and written exams.

Abilità comunicative
IN ITALIANO
• Capacità di comunicare e discutere temi, metodi e risultati della ricerca, in lingua inglese;
• Capacità di presentare i risultati in formato grafico: lo studente deve essere in grado di produrre disegni, immagini e altri strumenti grafici ad alto contenuto scientifico e di resa delle immagini. La struttura grafica deve identificare chiaramente il concetto scientifico o set di dati da evidenziare. Deve essere differenziato anche per il sistema di comunicazione utilizzato come pubblicazioni, PowerPoint, poster;
• Elaborazione e presentazione dei dati: l'elaborazione dei dati, la loro analisi e la loro rappresentazione sono un elemento fondamentale per la comunicazione scientifica. Come elaborare i dati, analizzarli e come renderli accessibili ai colleghi e al pubblico è di primaria importanza. Capire se una tabella, un grafico o un rapporto scritto siano più efficaci può rendere la ricerca più comprensibile e accessibile alla comunità scientifica e al pubblico. Lo studente imparerà ad essere autonomo in queste scelte;
IN ENGLISH:
For planetary science to have an impact, good communication is essential. Students will be taught the ability to communicate effectively and discuss research topics, methods, and results intelligently and persuasively. The communication skillset will be developed through the development of the following elements:
• Ability to communicate and discuss research topics, methods and results, in English; • Ability to present results in a graphic format: the student must be able to produce drawings, images and other graphic tools with a high scientific content and image rendering. The graphic structure must clearly identify the scientific concept or data set to be highlighted. It must also be differentiated for the communication system used such as publications, PowerPoints, posters;
• Data processing, analysis, and presentation: data processing, analysis and their representation are a key element for scientific communication. How to process data and how to make it accessible to colleagues and the public is of primary importance. Understanding whether a table, a graph or a written report is more effective can make research more understandable and accessible to the science community and the public. The student will learn to be autonomous in these choices;
• Ability to work in groups: group work is now an essential element, and the student must be able to work together with his colleagues demonstrating that in the future, in his field of work, he will be able to work effectively in groups, sharing responsibilities and behaving in a serious and concrete way to add the common goal.

Capacità di apprendimento
IN ITALIANO:
