Abstract:
In the second half of the twentieth century, in Egypt and the Middle East
the regimes in power faced a multifaceted opposition. In the region there
has been the growth of movements based on the political Islamic trend,
which arose from the matrix of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.
Alongside these, however, opposition movements of a secular, socialist
or liberal matrix have also emerged. These movements have often been
used by regimes in power precisely to counter the Islamist trend. These
groups have tried to establish a connection with workers’ movements and
independent trade unions (the latter were the subject of Giulio Regeni’s
studies), as was also observed in the events that preceded and prepared
the so-called “Arab Spring” uprisings. The paper aims to focus on the
interweaving of thes
