Abstract:
Francesco Garofalo, Architettura scritta.
Michele Bonino, editor.
Allemandi Editore, Torino 2008.
The book is a collection of eight essays written during 15 years. The introduction explains their relationship with the ongoing commitment of the author to design practice and teaching. Using the rhetorical device of the “dilemma”, Francesco Garofalo tries to define a position at the end of two decades when pragmatism and theoretical speculation are the preoccupations between which architects of the mid-generation have oscillated. The essays in the book examine the critical legacy on Manfredo Tafuri, and the crisis of Italian architecture, the quest for a new orthodoxy and the lessons of contemporary Rome, the writings of - and on - modernist masters such as Luigi Moretti and Ludovico Quaroni.
