This volume focuses on the attitude adopted by Italy with regard to the Montenegrin question and, by extension, to the Yugoslav question during the critical period marked by the two world wars. The main issues involved are the problematic Italian-Montenegrin alliance at the time of the Great War, the reactions raised by the union (or annexation) of Montenegro to Serbia within the new Yugoslav state, and the political and military projects generated by the Italian occupation of Montenegro two decades afterwards, in 1941-1943.
What emerges is a problematic picture, characterized by ambiguities and misunderstandings, sometimes by actual contrasts, which at the same time allows us to grasp in the concrete historical dynamic the interdependence of the peoples and countries bordering on the shores of the Adriatic.
