Analisi tipologica e contesto. Alcuni dati dai cimiteri abruzzesi tra tarda antichità e alto medioevo

This paper presents a preliminary analysis of 590 burials from 88 cemeteries in Abruzzo (4th–11th c.), focusing on tomb typology and topographic context. A hierarchical classification system (Type, Subtype, Variant, Subvariant) was developed based on construction features and materials. The results highlight regional and chronological shifts in burial practices, including the predominance of simple in-ground graves and built tombs and the emergence of monumental stone structures in the Early Middle Ages. Material use appears as a key indicator of both chronology and social meaning. This study provides the first step toward a regional typo-chronological framework for post-classical funerary contexts in central Italy.
