Abstract:
One of the interests of George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) in Romola (1862-63), her novel set
in renaissance Florence, is to pay homage to the Italian architectural monuments erected
in this city of art “par excellence”. The aesthetic patterns of the artists of the time are
exemplified by the stunning beauty of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore. The splendour
of the cathedral confronts the magnificence and the aesthetic finesse of the Signoria,
ruling the town, which serves as counterpart to religion and asserts the faith in a worldly
God.
