3D decIsion SuppoRt system for additive manUfactured ProducTs: applications in construction and biomedical engineering
Progetto The project proposes the conceptualization and achievement of a 3D Decision Support
System (DSS) to improve the performance of additive manufactured products in the
construction and biomedical sector. The DSS can be implemented into a 3D printer to
increase the quality of 3D printed products, reduce the number of products rejected for
defects and monitor the performance of the machine.
In particular, the support of the proposed system is threefold:
- On-line support concerning a real-time adjustment of 3D printing parameters to avoid
printing defects (some specific defects can be avoided or corrected in real time);
- Off-line support allows an automatic structural check of 3D printed components
exploiting an advanced damage recognition combined with a structural Digital Twin (allows
to understand if the defect affects the structural performance);
- Long-term support permits monitoring of the 3D printer quality (identify performance
decline) and suggest maintenance.
The system exploits the synergic combination between an intelligent sensor system
(Cameras, Material control and Optical coordinate measuring machine CMM) with an
Artificial Neural Network - based image recognition process to automatically identify
and classify defects (or defect precursors) in the printing process. The achieved information
about the typology and localization of the defect is transferred to a digital twin of the printing
component to assess the related structural performance. Finally, all the acquired and
elaborated data processrd by suitable algorithms to feed the DSS (On-line, Off-line and
Long-Term support).
The DSS will be developed for the three technologies that are more affecting the market:
Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM), Liquid Deposition Modelling (LDM) and Electron
Beam Additive Manufacturing EBAM. The investigated printed material will be Polyether
ether ketone, concrete and titanium respectively.
