Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive cultural and linguistic understanding of the Slavic world: from the ancient homeland to the rise of the modern Slavic states, from the Proto-Slavic to the moderns Slavic languages. By the end of the course students are expected to be familiar with the specific characteristics of the Slavic languages and the cultural as well as political and religious history that moulded them.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of a modern Slavic language.

Teaching Methods

Regular lessons, class presentations.

Assessment Methods

The final oral exam will assess the student's acquisition of the basic notions and issues of the course. The student's ability to contextualize and critically discuss the materials will also be assessed. The grading scale is from 1 to 30, and the exam will be evaluated on the basis of the the correctness and completeness of the answers with respect to the indicated criteria. An excellent score ((27-30) will be given to students who show an in-depth knowledge of the course contents, are able to contextualize their knowledge and critically discuss it. A good score (22-26) will be given to students who know the course contents and are able to establsih links among them; a sufficient score (18-21) will be given to students able to present the main contents of the course. An insufficient score will be given to students who do not know the basic notions and topics of the course.

The Slavic world from the origins to our day. This course has two parts: 1. Historical and cultural introduction; the Slavic geography; Christianization and literacy of the Slavic peoples. 2. Slavic linguistics (from Indo-european to slavic languages; from the paleo Slavic to modern Slavic languages).
