Syllabus

Course Objectives


Students will acquire familiarity with a wide range of literary terms and categories relating to literary history, theory, criticism, and figurative language. They will also develop skills in close reading, interpretation, historical contextualization, and critical thinking.

Course Prerequisites


Students are expected to have a good knowledge of English, and a basic knowledge of American literary history from the origins to the early-nineteenth century.

Teaching Methods


Lecture; class presentations.

Assessment Methods


The final oral exam will consist of a number of questions (from 3 to 5) on the literary works included in the syllabus, the historical context, the American culture from the Civil War to the contemporary age, and the critical bibliography in the syllabus.
The exam will assess the following abilities: detailed knowledge and contextualization of the literary works; textual analysis and knowledge of the main formal and thematic features of the literary works; discussion of the critical perspectives based on the critical bibliography included in the syllabus.
The exam will be evaluated by attributing an excellent score (30L) if students will show a detailed knowledge and ability to contextualize the literary texts, to discuss widely and apply critical perspectives to the literary works.
The exam will be evaluated by attributing a high score (30-28) if students will show an extensive knowledge and ability to contextualize the literary texts, to discuss and apply critical perspectives to the literary works.
The exam will be evaluated by attributing an intermediate score (27-24) if students will show a good knowledge and ability to contextualize the literary texts.
The exam will be evaluated by attributing a basic score (23-18) if students will show an overall knowledge of the literary works and their textual and contextual features.

Contents


"American Literature from the Civil War to the Contemporary Age".
This survey course will introduce students to American literature and culture through a selection of representative authors and texts of the above indicated period.
