Course Objectives

In line with the educational objectives of the Degree in Linguistic Mediation and Intercultural Communication, the aim of the course is to examine the most recent developments in the theoretical and practical debate on translation and to acquire linguistic competence - also with respect to mediation - at a fully autonomous level (B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference).

RESULTS OF APPROACH ATTENTION: The course aims to provide theoretical and methodological tools useful for the profession of translator in different fields, and to acquire both oral and written translation skills, from and into French.

KNOWLEDGE AND CAPACITY OF COMPREHENSION: knowledge and application of the main translation approaches applied to the various types of text. The aim of the course will be to consolidate and deepen the language skills both written and oral, also with reference to the interpretation of negotiations.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION: analyse translations according to the type of test and the different language registers;

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT: to reflect critically on the different approaches to translation and on the regulatory mechanisms that govern the standard and non-standard language.

COMMUNICATION ABILITIES: to be able to describe the main translation approaches and apply them to the different types of text being analyzed, to consolidate the skills of understanding, production and oral interaction. The student must be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the field of language mediation.

Course Prerequisites

The course is aimed at students who have acquired, both in writing and in speaking, a thorough knowledge of the grammatical, morphosyntactic and lexical structures of the French language at level B2. The language exam III can be undertook only after passing the French language and translation exam II and French Mediation I.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is carried out through frontal lessons using paper, audiovisual and multimedia material. The different theories of translation will be discussed, deepened and compared, from the most classical approaches to the most current ones.
The methods applied, compared to the French mediation module, will be based on the most recent reflections on the teaching/learning of dialogical interpretation. The theoretical reflection on the interpretation of negotiations will be accompanied by exercises aimed at developing the ability to listen, decode, understand, concentrate, memorize and reformulate, complete or summarized, in French and Italian, oral dialogues of increasing magnitude and conceptual complexity, presented in the form of communicative situations inspired by the professional reality, with particular reference to the judicial context - legal Italian and French-speaking countries. The course will be supplemented by and exercises held by the CLA

Assessment Methods

In order to prove the learning process, the student must pass a written and oral exam:
Written test: dictation and two translations of passages of different types: (journalistic, topical, literary), from and into French - evaluation in thirtieths)
Only the monolingual dictionary may be used for the two translations.

Oral test: evaluation in thirtieths:
The oral interview is aimed at assessing the language level of competence acquired. Subjects of the interview:
- Conversation on a topical issue proposed by the committee
Reflections on language
Reflections on the translation theory.
In order to demonstrate the learning of the mediation module, the student will have to pass an examination divided into three parts:
a. visual translation from French into Italian
b. visual translation from Italian into French
c. theoretical test relating to the interpretation of negotiations.
The overall grade in thirtieths is made up of the average of the marks obtained in the evaluations reported in the written test, in the oral test and in the three mini modules that are part of the mediation course

Contents

The course is divided into 2 modules:
Language and translation (7 CFU): The module will focus on the study of the French language, both oral and written, and aims to make the student acquire a level of competence at level B2+ of the Common European Framework. The progressive and systematic study of the normative mechanisms that regulate the language in its various components, will provide the tools for the acquisition of a correct and conscious use of written and oral French.
The module on translation aims to consolidate and refine translation techniques both from a theoretical and methodological point of view and from the point of view of contrasting Italian-French/French-Italian analysis.
The body of texts subject to analysis and translation will concern journalistic (newspaper or weekly articles), advertising (slogans and microtexts) and literary texts with reference to novels of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
A 36-hour-module on linguistic mediation is an integral part of the French Translation and Mediation III Language Course delivered in the first semester. The course offers a theoretical and practical approach to negotiation interpretation, with particular reference to the legal field; it is based on the expansion of linguistic skills and competences (vocabulary, terminology, syntax, linguistic registers, idiomatic expressions and phraseologism).
