Course Objectives

Knowledge


Understand the foundations of geriatrics, distinguishing it from gerontology and geragogy.

Describe the main physiological changes associated with normal and pathological aging.

Explain the concepts of frailty, comorbidity, and disability and their interaction in the elderly patient.

Identify the main geriatric conditions of rehabilitative interest (dementias, depression, COPD, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, immobilization syndrome, risk of falls).

Understand the role of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) and the Geriatric Assessment Unit.
Skills


Apply functional assessment tools such as ADL, IADL, MMSE, and NPI within a multidisciplinary team setting.

Identify risk factors for falls, functional decline, and loss of independence.

Contribute to the development of a personalized rehabilitation plan centered on the older adult.

Integrate geriatric clinical knowledge into occupational therapy intervention planning.

Promote disability prevention and the maintenance of independence in activities of daily living.
Autonomy of Judgment


Critically evaluate the level of self-sufficiency in the older adult.

Recognize clinical frailty conditions requiring multidisciplinary intervention.

Adapt occupational therapy interventions to the clinical and cognitive conditions of the geriatric patient.
Communication Skills


Communicate effectively with the older patient and caregivers.

Collaborate with the multiprofessional team in the management of frail patients.
Learning Skills


Update knowledge according to current guidelines and scientific evidence in geriatric rehabilitation.

Develop a person-centered approach aimed at improving quality of life.

Course Prerequisites


To attend the Geriatrics module, students are expected to have:


Basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

Fundamental concepts of general pathology.

Introductory knowledge of internal medicine.

Basic elements of psychology and neuropsychology.

Foundational principles of rehabilitation and occupational sciences.

Students should also be able to understand scientific texts in the medical and health sciences field.

Geriatric Assessment Unit and Multidimensional Assessment.
Self-sufficiency and assessment methods (ADL, IADL, MMSE, NPI).
Comorbidity, frailty, disability.
Immobilization syndrome. Falls in the elderly: assessment methodology.
Respiratory diseases in the elderly: COPD.
Metabolic diseases in the elderly: diabetes and diabetic foot.
Renal disease in the elderly: chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Alzheimer’s disease.
Depression in the elderly patient.
Nutrition in geriatric age.
