Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (01/03/2026 - 31/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the necessary tools to read, recognise and understand the documentary evidence (public and private) produced in the Italian area within the 8th-14th centuries.

Course Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites, but a basic knowledge of Latin and a good understanding of the main events in medieval and modern history are useful.

Teaching Methods

Classroom lectures, tutorials, active involvement of students in laboratory activities.

Assessment Methods

The final exam, in the form of an oral interview, will focus on the discussion of the topics dealt with in the course of the lectures; in particular, the following will be assessed: 1) an appropriate use of the specific language; 2) the ability to synthesise and analyse the topics dealt with during the course; 3) knowledge of the bibliography indicated in the lectures. The achievement of a critical view of the topics addressed and the mastery of the specific language will be assessed with marks of excellence (29-30 cum laude). A knowledge of the subject matter and the use of correct but not always appropriate language will lead to fair marks (25-28). Minimal knowledge of the subject matter and inappropriate language will lead to barely sufficient marks (18-24). Where serious gaps emerge, the result of the examination will be graded negatively.

Texts

- A. Pratesi, Genesi e forme del documento medievale, Jouvance, Roma, 1987 (numerose ristampe); - P. Cammarosano, L’edizione dei documenti medievali. Una guida pratica, Trieste, CERM, 2018.

Contents

The course will consider manuscript production of a documentary nature from the 8th to the 14th century, with the aim of illustrating its evolutionary and diachronic process, with particular reference to the panorama of medieval Italian documentary sources, to the different documentary genres and to the issues related to the production and preservation of documents, as well as to the modes of their transmission (concepts of authentic, genuine, false). The lectures will be accompanied by exercises in the reading and commentary of documents.

Course Language
