Course Objectives

1) knowledge and understanding of the various methods, forms and techniques peculiar to historical research;
2) critical skills acquired (autonomy of judgement in relation to the problems dealt with);
3) communication skills (correct use of terminology and clarity of exposition).

Teaching Methods

The workshop will be structured in 24 hours of frontal teaching, divided into 3 hours of lessons per week (for a total of 8 seminars), according to the academic calendar.
Each lecture will be accompanied by the active participation of the students.

Assessment Methods

Each student will be asked to write a short thesis, focusing on one of the case studies discussed in class. In the paper, reference should be made to both direct and indirect sources. The topic of the paper should be agreed in advance with the professor.

After a brief theoretical introduction on the methodology used by historians in their research, the course will be based on a series of concrete examples, starting with the use of sources from medieval, modern and contemporary history. Attention will also be paid to historiography and how historians should relate to what has already been written and studied on a given topic.
