Course Objectives


The course contributes to achieving the educational objectives of the Degree Programme by providing students with theoretical knowledge and methodological tools that are essential for understanding and analyzing the main topics of the relevant discipline. Specifically, students are expected to have acquired:key concepts from the area of dynamic psychology;the ability to critically address issues related to the objects of study in psychology and to communicate their reflections effectively.​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​Through the reading of texts and lessons focused primarily on in-class discussions of clinical material, the aim is to provide students with the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of psychoanalytic thought, especially in relation to the clinical-therapeutic context, as well as to facilitate the acquisition of a specific reference language.

Teaching Methods


The course is delivered in person and combines different teaching approaches that align with the expected learning outcomes. The main methods include:

Classroom lectures, aimed at presenting theoretical frameworks and key concepts, and providing a structured overview of the course content;
Practical sessions and case study discussions, to help students apply their knowledge and develop analytical and critical thinking skills.

Attendance is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended, as active participation in the various learning activities greatly supports the achievement of the course’s intended learning outcomes.

Assessment Methods


The first three exams after the conclusion of the course will be written. Subsequent exams will be oral.
It is possible that a final course exercise will be scheduled to assess learning at the end of the lessons.
WRITTEN EXAM
Student learning is assessed through a written exam consisting of 31 multiple-choice questions, each with three answer options, only one of which is correct. The questions cover the entire course syllabus. The exam is graded on a 30-point scale. The final score is based on the number of correct answers. The passing threshold is set at 18 out of 30. Incorrect or unanswered questions do not result in penalties. The test is designed to distinguish different levels of competence, in alignment with the expected learning outcomes.
ORAL EXAM
The exam consists of an oral colloquium designed to assess the student’s knowledge acquisition, conceptual understanding, language proficiency, and ability to interpret and analyze course content.
The colloquium will last approximately 20 minutes.
Assessment is based on a 0–30 grading scale (with the possibility of honors). A score between 18 and 23 reflects a sufficient level of learning; between 24 and 28, a good level; and between 29 and 30, an excellent level. Honors (“cum laude”) may be awarded in cases of exceptional analytical and critical reasoning skills demonstrated during the exam.

The following books have to be studied in all their parts:- Ciocca A., Storia della Psicoanalisi. Il Mulino: Bologna, 2014.- Freud S. (1911-1914), Tecnica della Psicoanalisi, Bollati Boringhieri, Torino, 1974.

Contents


The course aims to provide students with a basic knowledge of psychoanalysis, with specific attention to the contribution of Freud, Ferenczi, Jung, A. Freud, Klein, Winnicott, Bion, Kohut and others. It will then refer to the birth of psychoanalysis in Italy and its subsequent developments in other countries. In particular, the main theoretical-clinical models of psychoanalysis, as well as some key concepts concerning psychic dynamics and the psychotherapeutic setting, will be explored.
The lessons will be structured to begin with the discussion of clinical material related to classic cases (such as Anna O., Dora, the Wolf Man, Richard), leading to the formulation of diagnostic hypotheses and the contribution provided by these cases to the construction of psychoanalytic knowledge.
