Course Objectives

This module aims to teach the student the theoretical fundamentals elements of inferential statistics, to deal with problems of quantification and quantitative data processing.
Expected learning outcomes
1. Knowledge and Understanding
The student will acquire a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts of inferential statistics, including:
Probability theorems
Combinatorial calculus
Theoretical distributions (binomial, normal)
Sampling and sampling distributions
Hypothesis testing and statistical tests
2. Applied Knowledge and Understanding
The student will be able to:
Apply probability rules to real-world problems
Use theoretical distributions to model phenomena
Calculate and interpret standardized scores
Perform statistical tests (t-test, chi-square, ANOVA) on real data
Interpret statistical results in applied contexts
3. Judgment Autonomy
The student will develop the ability to:
Critically assess the appropriateness of statistical methods for specific problems
Formulate and test statistical hypotheses independently
Interpret results with awareness of their limitations and implications
4. Communication Skills
The student will be able to:
Clearly and accurately communicate the results of statistical analyses
Use appropriate technical language to describe methods and findings
Present data and conclusions in written and oral form, supported by graphs and tables
5. Learning Skills
The student will develop:
The ability to independently learn new statistical tools
The capacity to integrate theoretical and practical knowledge to solve complex problems
A mindset oriented toward continuous learning in quantitative and methodological fields

Course Prerequisites

It is necessary to take Psychometrics I test before.

Teaching Methods

Frontal classes, exercises and simulations.

During the classes, the professor will teach the themes both at the theoretical and at the practical level with exercises that foresee a strong interactive component between teacher and students. Fundamental topics will be analyzed with exercises carried out alone or in small groups.
It is necessary to book online by the deadline, through a computerized procedure present on the faculty website (www.unich.it). The reservation can be made until the expiry date shown on the booking page next to each exam. Otherwise, students will not be able to.

The classes are organized in 64 hours of frontal teaching, based on the academic schedule.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test related to the entire program (Psychometrics II) with multiple choice questionnaire (FIRST PART) and exercises to be performed with the support of a formulary (SECOND PART). Any oral integration will be at the discretion of the teacher.

The use of a calculator is recommended for the completion of the exam (whereas other instruments, like a telephone, are not allowed). The exam lasts approximately 50 minutes.

Evaluation: final vote

The maximum number of points of the evaluation (30) are subdivided as follows: 20 points for the theoretical questions and 10 points for the exercises. The passing threshold is set at 18 out of 30. Incorrect or unanswered questions do not result in penalties. The test is designed to distinguish different levels of competence, in alignment with the expected learning outcomes.
