Syllabus
Course Objectives
The course contributes to the achievement of the educational objectives of the Bachelor by deepening and broadening the knowledge acquired in the first year in the field of psychobiology, with particular attention to the development of critical thinking in both theoretical and methodological fields.
In addition, the course aims to provide the cognitive tools necessary for a fruitful continuation of the study of the mind-brain relationship.
In summary, students must demonstrate that they have acquired:
- the theoretical and methodological foundations of psychobiological knowledge;
- the ability to critically address issues related to the objects of study of psychobiology and to effectively communicate their thoughts on them.
Expected Learning Outcomes:
1) Knowledge and Understanding:
Acquire a comprehensive framework for understanding the neurobiological basis of cognitive, emotional and behavioral functioning.
To acquire theoretical foundations and methodological knowledge useful and appropriate for the continuation of professional training in the Master's Degrees in the psychological area.
2) Applied knowledge and understanding skills:
Acquire the ability to recognize the cognitive, emotional and behavioral functioning of the individual and convey the foundational elements for a psychological diagnosis.
Applying knowledge of some useful methods and tools for psychologists to delve into cognitive, emotional and behavioral functioning. Practical application of some diagnostic and intervention tools, with simulations in the neuropsychological clinical setting.
3) Autonomy of judgment:
Acquire the ability to compare different theoretical perspectives.
Founding knowledge on criteria of scientific rigor.
4) Communicative skills:
Knowing how to communicate acquired knowledge through oral expositions and/or written essay or open question.
5) Learning skills:
Develop ability to reflect on study topics, and to learn and meta-reflect on one's own learning skills and processes.
Course Prerequisites
The exam can be taken only after having passed and verbalized Psychobiology I.
Teaching Methods
Teaching is delivered in-presence and involves the integrated use of various teaching methods, selected in accordance with the expected learning outcomes. In particular, the teaching activity is organized as follows:
- Classroom lectures, aimed at the transmission of theoretical content, systematization of key concepts and acquisition of disciplinary language;
- Practical exercises and/or scientific articles and case analyses, useful for applying the acquired knowledge and developing skills of interpretation, critical reflection and problem solving;
- Seminar activities, also with external lecturers or experts in the field, aimed at deepening specific topics or case studies;
- Group work or oral presentations, geared toward the development of transversal skills such as collaboration, independent judgment and communication skills;
- Optional activities (e.g., labs), if any, will be announced at the beginning of the course or during the semester.
Attendance is not compulsory, but is strongly recommended, as active participation in the various educational activities significantly promotes the achievement of the course's educational objectives.
Assessment Methods
Verification of learning is through a written test consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions, each of which has four answer alternatives, only one of which is correct. The questions cover the entire course syllabus, and the questions will be designed to require integration of the knowledge learned and critical reflection on it. In this way, the exam, in addition to testing knowledge and understanding of individual topics in the program, will test the skills mentioned above (see Expected Learning Outcomes).
The assessment is expressed in thirtieths. The final score is determined by the number of correct answers. The threshold for passing the exam is set at 18/30. Any incorrect or no answers are not penalized. The test is structured to distinguish different levels of competence, consistent with the expected learning outcomes.
Those who pass the written test may request a supplementary oral examination, in which wrong answers will be discussed, verifying language property and the ability to interpret and analyze. The outcome of the optional oral interview may increase or decrease the grade proposed at the end of the written test.
For attending students, there may be ongoing (partial) tests or early exam sessions (pre-appointments) during the semester.
