Syllabus

Course Objectives

The student will acquire elements of the neuroscientific basis of consciousness.
In particular, s/he will acquire:
• a complete theoretical framework of consciousness construct through the main studies of philosophy of mind, psychology and neuroscience which have described its neurobiological correlates. The most recent theoretical approaches (Connectionism) and models of functioning (Integrated Information Theory) will be discussed;
• the skill to autonomously apply theoretical and methodological knowledge to the multiple circumstances in which the construct of consciousness is involved in neuroscientific research and clinical practice;
• independent judgment and critical analysis in approaching to the scientific studies (conducted with behavioral methods and brain activity records of healthy participants and/or patients with neurological impairments) regarding consciousness in a focused and/or transversal way, as well as in the main current public debates on social and ethical issues;
• the ability to transmit the knowledge learned during the course, as well as to transmit their critical opinion on ethical issues, to specialist and non-specialist colleagues by using specific terminology;
• scientific/professional learning and updating skills useful for autonomously increasing one's own neuroscientific knowledge on the topic of consciousness.

Course Prerequisites

There are no prerequisite restrictions.
It is desirable - but not mandatory - that the student would possess basic knowledge in Psychobiology and Physiological Psychology (teaching courses: Psychobiology I) and English language, as well as some notions (level: secondary school) of Mathematics, Physics and Philosophy.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons (presentation of slides, scientific articles and video clips).

Assessment Methods

The teacher will determine the format of the exam (written or oral) according to the number of registered students. In the case of a written exam, the test will consist of thirty multiple-choice questions. Each question presents four answer options, only one of which is correct. A correct answer is awarded one point; a wrong answer (or multiple answers given or no answer given) is awarded zero points. If the written test is passed, the student may optionally take an oral exam to integrate their written result. The oral exam may be conducted in English upon request.

Office hours are held weekly, by appointment, in the professor’s office located in "Blocco A di Psicologia". Students are invited to check the instructor’s institutional webpage for updated office hours and contact details.
For any questions, students can contact the instructor at: d.marzoli@unich.it.
In addition to the standard teaching hours, students may take part in optional supplementary activities, including:
Tutoring sessions to support exam preparation and reinforce key concepts;Optional lab sessions or practical activities, scheduled during the semester and communicated during class or via the elearning platform;External seminars or guest lectures on topics relevant to the course, when available.Participation in these activities is voluntary and does not affect the final grade, but it is strongly recommended to enhance the learning experience and deepen the practical understanding of course content.
