Course Objectives


At the end of the course, students will be able to apply the acquired language knowledge/skills and basic mediation techniques to adequately handle a situation where cross-lingual mediation or dialogic interpretation is needed.The main learning objectives are:. improving listening comprehension skills in English in its diatopic varieties;. mastering translation and mediation strategies to be applied to different communicative situations and contexts, with particular attention to the appropriateness of content, terminology, register, and the use of inclusive language;. knowing the key terms used in the areas that will be covered during the course;. reflect on ethical/professional issues related to cross-linguistic and intercultural mediation.

Course Prerequisites


Students must have completed the Lingua inglese I (English Language I) exam.

Teaching Methods


The effectiveness of the course largely relies on the students’ active participation: Besides lectures on theoretical and historical aspects of mediation and interpreting, classes will be collaborative workshops entailing. the preparation of bilingual thematic glossaries and the analysis of various linguistic registers;. activities aimed at developing note-taking and synthesis skills. memory enhancement exercises, sight interpretation;. role play of situations where cross-lingual mediation is required.

Assessment Methods


Type of exam: oral.
Students will have to pass a listening comprehension test to be admitted to the oral exam. The latter includes questions in English on the course contents and performing sight interpretation and/or cross-linguistic mediation. Grades will be expressed along a scale ranging from 0 to 30/30. Pass: 18/30.

Contents


The course introduces the main theoretical and methodological aspects of cross-language mediation, and develops receptive, productive, interaction and mediation skills through the use of authentic materials and role-plays. Special attention will be given to the pragmatic and (con)textual dimensions so as to enhance the students’ analytical skills and facilitate total understanding of the written or oral text in preparation for the act of mediation. Vocabulary will be expanded, especially in the areas of politics, institutions, economics, business, and community, while language reformulation techniques and sight interpretation will be acquired together with strategies for effective communication management.
