Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (22/09/2025 - 23/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the course is the understanding of the climatic and meteorological characteristics of the territory in relation to the framework of climate change.
In particular, intense meteoric events will be analyzed (characteristics, distribution, temporal statistics and time series).
The student will learn about hydrogelogic risk projects and direct connections with climatic and meteorological elements.

Course Prerequisites

Detailed Geomorphology knowledge.

Teaching Methods

The course is delivered in synchronous online mode for the lecture-based component, with interactive teaching conducted partly online (computer lab) and partly in person (field excursions). It includes online lectures, virtual computer lab sessions, field excursions, and seminars conducted by specialized professionals. Specific case studies of intense meteorological events are examined, focusing on the analysis of meteorological and climatic data and their geomorphological effects in various environmental settings (coastal, fluvial, gravitational, karst, nival, and glacial).

Assessment Methods

Exam consisting of written and oral tests.
Oral test: it is focused on verifying the acquisition of the methods of metoclimatic analysis applied to the assessment of hydrogeological hazard and risk.

Written test:
Essay on the meteoclimatic analysis of an heavy meteorological event discussed with the teacher and the related geomorphological effects; the analysis is aimed at assessing hydrogeological risks; it must describe the geomorphological characteristics of the chosen area, the related geomorphological hazards, and the general climatic and meteorological characteristics in relation to intense events; it includes the creation of geomorphological and thematic maps.

The final grade on /30. The oral test is correspond to 30% and the written essay is 70% of the final grade.
To pass the exam it is necessary to have a minimum grade of 18/30.

Contents

The course focuses on the analysis of the interactions between climatic characteristics and meteorological phenomena and territory in terms of geomorphological processes, hazards and related risks. In particular, the impacts of extreme meteorological events on the landscape on geomorphological hazards, on anthropic activities (urban areas, structures and infrastructures) are analyzed. The tools of meteoclimatic analysis are applied to the analysis of the environment and the interactions between man and landscape.
