Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (01/03/2026 - 15/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the course will be to provide knowledge on the biological and structural characteristics of microorganisms, microbial pathogenicity, microbe-host interactions, infection control, antimicrobial drug classes, their use and resistance mechanisms adopted by microorganisms. The laboratory exercises will allow the acquisition, by the student, of the basic techniques for the identification and monitoring of microorganisms in order to operate in a microbiology laboratory.

Course Prerequisites

Understanding the discipline requires sufficient knowledge of animal biology, general and inorganic chemistry, anatomy. In particular, students who will decide to do the microbiology exam must have previously passed the exams of Animal Biology and Human Anatomy.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is structured in lectures according to the teaching calendar, classroom exercises and practical exercises in the laboratory. The lectures and laboratory activities include a strong interactive component between Teachers and Students. Attendance is mandatory.

Assessment Methods

The learning assessment is based on an oral exam. The student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired sufficient knowledge on: - the biological and structural characteristics of the microorganisms covered during the course - microbial pathogenicity and microorganism-host interactions; - the survival strategies adopted in the environment and in the host - the mechanisms of gene recombination - the control of infectious diseases; - the classes of antimicrobial drugs, their use and the resistance mechanisms adopted by microorganisms. The oral exam will be based on three questions that will allow further insights into the program covered during the course. The teacher provides the possibility of having foreign students take the exam in English.

Texts

-N. Carlone et al. : “Microbiologia Farmaceutica”, Edises - Murray P. et al.: “Microbiologia Medica”, Elsevier ed. (IX ed., 2021) - La Placa M.: “Principi di Microbiologia Medica”, Esculapio ed. (XIV ed., 2014) To support and integrate the text, the teacher will provide additional teaching material (slides shown during class, recommended readings, videos, animations, web pages, etc.).

Contents

- Introduction to the course - Structure and functions of the bacterial cell - Microbial growth - Bacterial survival strategies - Concepts of pathogenicity and microbial epidemiology - Gene recombination mechanisms - Sterilization and disinfection - Chemoantibiotics - Virus structure and classification - Mycetes - Practical laboratory classes.

Course Language

Italian

More information

To attend practical laboratory classes, students must have passed the course on safety provided by the University.Furthermore, the publicity of lesson schedules and educational programs is ensured by the CdS and University website and the exam session is assured by the ESSE3 application. The teacher receives students from Monday to Friday by appointment via email (rossella.grande@unich.it).
