Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (01/03/2026 - 31/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The workshop aims to introduce students to the direct reading of manuscripts and documents in Latin script, in which literary and documentary production was handed down until the invention of printing, both in Latin (classical, medieval and humanistic) and in the various vernaculars of Western Europe. The aim is also to address the critical interpretation of the phenomena found in a manuscript and document, both textually and palaeographically.

Course Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites, but a basic knowledge of Latin and a good understanding of the main events in medieval and modern history are useful.

Teaching Methods

Each meeting will alternate between face-to-face lectures and practical reading exercises from reproductions of manuscripts and documents, both individual and collective.

Assessment Methods

In addition to attendance at classroom lectures, weekly transcription exercises from the handout tables will be required, as well as attendance at an eleventh final meeting, for a final test to verify learning of the content covered and manuscript and document reading skills.

Texts

Teaching materials will be made available to students directly by the lecturer.

Contents

Basic notions on the production and circulation of codices and documents, on the main scripts in Latin characters from the origins to the 15th century and on the abbreviative system will be provided, with attention also to the method of examining manuscripts and documents for ecdotic purposes. Reading exercises will be proposed for each script.

Course Language

Italian

More information

Students will be provided with a handout with reading exercises and diagrams on the characteristics of the scriptures addressed. Further materials will gradually be made available on the workshop's Teams platform.
