Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and applied competencies in the field of forensic psychopathology, with a specific focus on the understanding, assessment, and intervention related to significant psychopathological disorders and deviant behaviors within legal and criminological contexts.
Specifically, by the end of the course, students will be able to:

Understand the theoretical and epistemological foundations of forensic psychopathology as a discipline at the intersection of clinical psychology, criminology, and law;

Gain knowledge of the main theoretical and clinical models of deviant behavior, integrating perspectives and theories from various psychological approaches;

Identify the major forms of psychopathology associated with deviance, including personality disorders (e.g., antisocial, borderline, psychopathy), paraphilic disorders, and substance or behavioral addictions, with particular reference to their behavioral correlates in forensic contexts;

Understand the relationship between mental disorders and criminal behavior, with specific attention to phenomena such as gender-based violence, stalking, femicide, domestic violence, and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV);

Acquire basic competencies in forensic psychopathological assessment, including the ability to analyze criminal responsibility, risk of recidivism, and social dangerousness;

Understand evidence-based treatment models for individuals with relevant psychopathologies in correctional settings, as well as the criteria for assessing suicide risk in detention contexts;

Develop a critical and ethically grounded mindset for the professional practice of psychology in forensic contexts, including within interdisciplinary frameworks.
