Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to promote:

Knowledge and understanding of the main explanatory theories of different forms of abuse and maltreatment of minors, as well as developmental issues associated with foster care and adoption.
Knowledge and understanding of the main clinical profiles associated with various forms of abuse and maltreatment across different developmental stages.
Knowledge and understanding of the use of key assessment tools applicable to minors (observation, interviews, tests) to recognize the phenomenon and evaluate its psychological impact.
Knowledge and understanding of the main training, prevention, and intervention strategies, as well as the evaluation of their effectiveness.
Independent judgment in assessing types of maltreatment and their possible consequences.
The development of strong communication skills and the ability to integrate acquired knowledge with the characteristics of the phenomenon and the resources available in operational contexts.
The acquisition of effective communication and processing skills to design prevention plans, interventions, and reports related to psychodiagnostic evaluations.

Course Prerequisites

Basic Knowledge of developmental psychology

Teaching Methods


The course includes both lectures and practical activities conducted in the classroom.During the course, group work and oral presentations are planned to foster the development of transversal skills such as collaboration, independent judgment, and communication abilities.Seminars will also be held, including sessions with external lecturers or field experts, aimed at exploring specific topics or case studies in greater depth.
Attendance is not mandatory but strongly recommended, as active participation in the various learning activities significantly contributes to achieving the educational objectives of the course.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral test aimed at verifying the acquired knowledge, conceptual mastery, accuracy of language, and the ability to interpret and analyze psychodiagnostic information and intervention principles. The test will be graded on a scale from 0 to 30 (with honors if applicable). A score between 18 and 23 indicates sufficient knowledge, a score between 23 and 28 indicates good knowledge, a score between 28 and 30 indicates excellent knowledge, and "with honors" reflects exceptional analytical skills and critical reasoning on the course topics.

Contents

The course will address the phenomenon of abuse and maltreatment in childhood, the risk contexts, and its consequences on the child's development.
In the first part, the various types of child maltreatment will be defined, and tools for assessing and identifying the phenomenon will be explored in depth. Additionally, developmental issues associated with foster care and adoption will be examined.
The second part will focus on the effects of maltreatment on the child's socio-emotional and cognitive development, as well as related applications for prevention and intervention.
Finally, guidelines for structuring prevention and treatment interventions aimed at the child and the family system will be discussed.
