Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

Understand fundamental concepts in organic chemistry, including bonding, hybridization, isomerism, and functional groups.
Recognize the structure and reactivity of key organic compounds used in polymeric materials.
Classify polymers by origin, structure, and chemical behavior.
Analyze natural and synthetic polymers of cosmetic interest, assessing their functional properties.
Describe main polymerization methods (condensation, addition, radical) and related industrial processes.
Evaluate chemical modifications of polymers to achieve specific properties (e.g., hydrophilicity, controlled release).

Course Prerequisites

none

Teaching Methods

The course is delivered in blended mode, with 50% in-person and 50% online activities, combining TEL-DE (content delivery) and TEL-DI (interactive learning).
Students will engage in case study analysis, individual and group work, including e-tivities, aimed at applying theoretical knowledge and developing operational and professional skills.

Assessment Methods

Student assessment includes:

Final exam: written test with open-ended questions, to be taken during one of the scheduled exam sessions.

The final grade will be assigned according to the following scale:

18–22/30: basic knowledge with some gaps
23–25/30: fair understanding with clear exposition
26–28/30: good mastery of the content
29–30/30: excellent knowledge with ability to connect and contextualize topics
30 cum laude: all questions answered correctly

Texts

Teaching materials will be provided throughout the course.

Contents

The module provides foundational knowledge in organic chemistry to understand the structure and reactivity of polymeric materials, with a focus on polymers used in cosmetics. Core concepts of chemical bonding, isomerism, and main classes of organic compounds are introduced. The course explores polymer classification, structure, and synthesis, both natural and synthetic, and their application in cosmetic formulations. Specific attention is given to polymerization methods and chemical modifications aimed at improving functional properties.
Key topics:

Chemical bonding, isomerism, and organic functional groups
Structure and classification of polymers
Natural and synthetic polymers in cosmetics
Polymer synthesis and polymerization methods (condensation, addition, radical)
Physicochemical properties and polymer functionalization
