Syllabus

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the module, students will be able to:

Identify and classify key chemical ingredients in cosmetic supplements.
Understand the biochemical mechanisms and bioavailability of active compounds.
Analyze the link between chemical structure and cosmetic efficacy.

Evaluate the safety and regulatory aspects, including potential contaminants and MOCA materials.

Course Prerequisites

none

Teaching Methods

The course is delivered in blended mode, with 50% in-person and 50% online activities, combining TEL-DE (content delivery) and TEL-DI (interactive learning).
Students will engage in case study analysis, individual and group work, including e-tivities, aimed at applying theoretical knowledge and developing operational and professional skills

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral test aimed at evaluating the student’s knowledge, critical understanding, and correct use of subject-specific terminology related to the course content. The final grade is expressed out of thirty, with a minimum passing score of 18/30. Exam sessions are scheduled according to the academic calendar established by the Degree Program Council in Cosmetic Science and Technology.
18–22/30: sufficient knowledge but with gaps; 23–25/30: fair knowledge, clear exposition; 26–28/30: good mastery of the contents; 29–30/30: excellent knowledge, ability to connect and contextualize; 30 cum laude: correct answers to all questions

Contents

This module presents the main substances that make up a dietary supplement intended for cosmetic use, and analyzes their interactions with the skin. The aim of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive overview of the chemical composition of dietary supplements sold in pharmacies.
Key Topics:

Chemical composition of cosmetic dietary supplements
Interaction of bioactive compounds with skin
Bioavailability and bioaccessibility mechanisms
Chemical reactions in food processing (e.g. Maillard reaction)
Antioxidant activity and plant-derived compounds
Food contaminants and safety (e.g. acrylamide, heavy metals, mycotoxins)

Regulatory frameworks and food-contact materials (MOCA).
