Course Objectives

The achievement of the therapeutic target is fundamental for obtaining the benefits of the therapy therefore the patient's attitude in following the prescriber's indications correctly and in continuing to take the drug is crucial. Studies show that the consequences of poor compliance include poor results in achieving therapeutic targets, with increased costs, increased hospitalization and higher mortality.
The course also has the objective of deepening and understanding the mechanisms that regulate the relationship between drugs and therapeutic effect with respect to therapeutic adherence and compliance.
The course, in addition, provides the knowledge necessary for the determination of the health aspects of the individual in terms of quality or life risks and social economic costs in cases of non-adherence or persistence of therapy, also provides knowledge of strategies to promote in patients, full adherence and therapeutic persistence to avoid taking the drug irregularly and inconsistently.
The course also aims to provide the student with the tools to understand the etiology, pathophysiology and clinical framework of the main minor ailments that can be addressed in the professional practice of the pharmacist and treatable with drugs and self-medication devices (OTC and SOP). Specifically, dermatological, central nervous system (headache), digestive, musculoskeletal, dermatological and cooling diseases (flu and nasal congestion) are studied in depth.
During the lessons there will be an intense and continuous use of databases for scientific research in order to stimulate the use of the PC for the realization of the paper.

Course Prerequisites

The student, for the full understanding of the topics covered, as well as General Pathology, Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy must have good basic knowledge acquired in the courses of Human Anatomy, Biology, Microbiology and General Physiology. Where appropriate, hints of General Pathology, Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy are called to class to facilitate understanding of the course topics.

Teaching Methods

Traditional didactic method through frontal or telematic lessons and classroom exercises and didactic laboratories. Teaching support activities, seminars and learning checks are planned

Assessment Methods

For the "Adherence to therapy" module, the exam consists of an oral test based on the discussion of a paper / paper on a specific topic discussed and deepened during the lessons. The objective of the examination suitability verification consists in verifying the level of achievement of the previously indicated training objectives. The student must demonstrate to KNOW and be able to APPLY the knowledge acquired on the basic principles of pharmacology and toxicology of the object of the paper, CONNECT the topics and ADDRESS and SOLVE complex problems that arise in pharmacological practice also demonstrating possession communication skills and correct use of appropriate terminology.

The course aims to offer the student (and expects the student to have): in-depth knowledge of the collateral and toxic pharmacological effects of self-medication, their use in the prevention and treatment of pathologies of the main diseases treatable with self-medication.
