Syllabus

Course Objectives

Knowledge: • understand the historical genesis of critical thinking; • analyse the principles of logic (syllogistic, formal and informal argumentation) and rhetoric; • identify cognitive biases and the dynamics of disinformation in the digital age.
Skills: • critically evaluate texts and discourses, detecting errors in reasoning and rhetorical manipulation; • formulate and refute structured arguments in debating contexts; • applying argument analysis and debiasing plans.
Transversal competences: • working in teams to manage situations of argumentative uncertainty; • adopting a metacognitive approach and reflecting on one's own thinking strategies; • integrating historical and philosophical perspectives with contemporary challenges (e.g. fake news, AI, big data).

Course Prerequisites

None.

Teaching Methods

• Interactive lectures (short theoretical explanations, concrete examples and discussions with the lecturer). • Workshops and simulations (collaborative analysis of texts, regulated debates, role-play on conspiracy theories). • Written and oral argumentation (argument analysis exercises and public speaking practice). • Metacognitive reflection (self-assessment questionnaires, developing strategies to recognise fallacies and biases in real-life situations).
Some lessons will be in delivered online.

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of written and oral parts. It consists of: • an assessment of comprehension of the main contents (rhetoric, logic, cognitive biases); • a critical analysis of a short text or dialogue, highlighting fallacies, rhetorical aspects, and biases; • (for attending students) a discussion of an optional project/report on a specific case study.
Evaluation criteria: completeness and accuracy in the exposition of the acquired knowledge and in rhetorical-logical analysis.
