Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (22/09/2025 - 21/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide information and tools for understanding the communication process mediated by technology. In particular, the interaction strategies of human perception and the cognitive system are described, as well as the techniques for designing and implementing strategies for evaluating the usability and accessibility of interactive systems. These considerations form the basis of the techniques for designing a satisfying, pleasant and effective digital experience. The student will be able to evaluate the pros and cons of different design options to support effective digital communication and draw appropriate conclusions based on usability and accessibility assessments based on user testing and other scientific research methods.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic subjects (Mathematical Analysis, Physics, Geometry, Statistics, Informatics)

Teaching Methods

The program will be developed through lectures, exercises and laboratory activities.

Assessment Methods

The level of learning of the students will be defined through the evaluation: i) of an oral test consisting of 2 theoretical questions; ii) the discussion of a practical project (typically the development of an interface programmed in Matlab language).

Contents

Human-Machine Interaction is a discipline that deals with the design, development and evaluation of interactive systems. It also concerns the study of the main phenomena and factors (such as physical characteristics of the system, psychological, cultural, aesthetic, organizational factors) which determine the quality of the user experience. The course is divided into three main parts: - the first is dedicated to theoretical insights into human action and human error, with a focus on the anatomical-functional aspects of the organs involved in man-machine interaction; - the second is aimed at acquiring skills on the machine side (e.g. computers, robots, etc.) - the third is dedicated to deepening the interface systems between man and machine. Another fundamental part of the course concerns the study of the Matlab programming language.
