Syllabus

Course Objectives


a) to develop a methodology based on critical analysis in order to be able to discuss by description of landmark genetic experiments; b) to gain an harmonic and not dogmatic view of living being, to obtain a comprehensive picture of shared genetic, and morpho-functional features from viruses to humans.
DD 1: Knowledge and Understanding
At the end of the course the student will be able to: know and understand the theories, principles and practices of the discipline of medical genetics in the health and dietetic fields.


DD 2: Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course the student will be able to: apply the acquired knowledge to solve theoretical and clinical problems regarding genetic phenotypes, perform clinical tasks and interpret data in simulated contexts or descriptions of real conditions.


DD 3 Making judgements
At the end of the course the student will be able to: collect and evaluate data, verify hypotheses or clinical scenarios, to formulate judgements also on the basis of limited or incomplete or complex information regarding heredity and medical genetics.
DD 4 Communication Skills
At the end of the course the student will be able to: Effectively communicate medical genetics knowledge, information relevant to dietetics, clinical problems and solutions to specialist and non-specialist interlocutors and in different contexts.


DD 5 Learning Skills
At the end of the course the student will be able to: learn independently, to update oneself and to deal with new topics or even complex problems. The student will have the tools to independently evaluate the genetic data of a clinical problem and foresee possible procedures for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

Course Prerequisites


No prerequisites.

Teaching Methods


Traditional lessons; optional laboratory activities concerning microscopy, cell culture, cytogenetics and molecular genetics techniques.

Assessment Methods


Oral exam.

The result of the exam is expressed in thirtieths according to an increasing scale in relation to the demonstration of knowledge, the appropriateness of the language, the logic and coherence of the exposition:
- sufficient but incomplete basic knowledge: mark 18 - 22 thirtieths;
- fair knowledge and clarity of exposition: mark 23-25 thirtieths;
- good knowledge and ability to illustrate the topics with language properties and mastery of the subject: grade 26-28 thirtieths;
- excellent knowledge of the topics and excellent expository skills, critical reasoning: mark 28-30 thirtieths.
Honors are reserved for students who demonstrate particularly in-depth knowledge, particular ability to expose and critical reasoning.

DNA organization within cell compartments; genetic information transmission through cell division; meiosis, mitosis and cell cycle control; Mendelian monogenic inheritance, genotype/phenotype correlation, sex chromosome linked genes. Mendel law exceptions, gene linkage, multifactorial inheritance. Gene mutations, recombination and transposon activities. Epigenetics. Human normal karyotype and its aberrations.
