Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the students are able to describe the evolution of Latin language and apply the main elements of historical grammar and Latin metric into the analysis of the texts. The students will be able to set an original critical discourse on a text in Latin, contextualizing it in the historical period and defining its register

Course Prerequisites

The course is intended for the students of the ancient curriculum of the Master's Degree in Philology, Linguistics and Literary Traditions, which want to deepen the scientific study of Latin in its various aspects. In order to take the exam it is necessary to have a good knowledge of the Latin language and literature and have already supported at least 6 credits in Latin literature during the three-year or specialized degree. Like the students of the master's degree program, those who take the exam to obtain teaching credits must demonstrate the same skills in the language and in Latin literature.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 36 h of frontal teaching and 6 h of seminars on individual topics.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment consists of an exam (script test + oral test) on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess students’ skills and in particular, an understanding of the issues discussed during the course, an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography in the course programme, a correct command of the specific language as well as critical and methodological abilities will be evaluated. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.
