Contents
The growing openness that globalization has generated in the geopolitical, economic and cultural fields has decisively influenced the development of contemporary tourism, disproportionately expanding its range of action, and has made tourism one of the main economic sectors worldwide, with the highest rate of development and the greatest reactivity to economic crises. In their very close intertwining, globalization and international tourism are therefore able to trigger a process (virtuous or vicious, depending on the case and point of view) that feeds and strengthens itself. The module will analyze the dynamics of development of the tourist space and the related operational implications and will provide theories and models to understand the transition from mass tourism to sustainable tourism and its importance in tourism development and to critically evaluate the impacts of tourism at different scales. In particular, the following will be analyzed: the theory of the life cycle of the tourist destination, evaluating its usefulness, applications, costs and benefits; the tourism-environment debate and the conceptual approach to sustainable tourism; ecotourism; rural tourism; sustainable cultural tourism.
