Contents

The growing openness that globalization has generated in the geopolitical, economic and cultural fields has decisively influenced the development of contemporary tourism, disproportionately expanding its range of action, and has made tourism one of the main economic sectors worldwide, with the highest rate of development and the greatest reactivity to economic crises. In their very close intertwining, globalization and international tourism are therefore able to trigger a process (virtuous or vicious, depending on the case and point of view) that feeds and strengthens itself. The module will analyse the most recent trends in contemporary tourism, from multiple points of view: new types of tourism, new motivations of tourists, new forms of integration in the tourism sector, new forms of hospitality, current territorial repercussions of tourism, with particular reference to the phenomenon known as overtourism. Several case studies will also be analysed, with particular reference to the cities of Lisbon and Naples, which are experiencing a boom in terms of incoming flows that is generating significant consequences from a socio-economic and territorial point of view.
