BONCIO Paolo

Paolo Boncio is Associate Professor of Structural Geology and Tectonics at the University "G. d'Annunzio" of Chieti-Pescara (UniCH), habilitated as Full Professor since 2017. He currently serves as Head of the Bachelor's Degree Programme in Geological Sciences (since 2025) and Coordinator of the Geology Section of the INGEO Department (since 2024). He graduated cum laude in Geological Sciences at the University of Perugia in 1993 and obtained his PhD in Earth Sciences in 1998. He has worked at UniCH since 2001, as permanent Researcher from 2001 and Associate Professor from 2005. His research focuses on active tectonics, earthquake geology, seismotectonics and surface faulting hazard, with internationally recognised expertise in active fault characterization, 3D seismogenic source definition and fault displacement hazard analysis, including probabilistic approaches (PFDHA). He contributed to the Italian national guidelines for land use planning in areas affected by active and capable faults, and to the international SURE and FDHI databases. He is a member of the international research groups Fault2SHA, UCLA-FDHI and EuQuaGe, and co-founder of the University spin-off SHAking (2023). In 2024 he received a Recognition Award from the IAEA for his contribution to fault displacement hazard. H-index 31, over 3,280 citations (Scopus), 90+ papers in international peer-reviewed journals.
