Title: From Colonial America to the Age of Revolutions (17th-18th centuries) (6 CFU)
From the 17th to the 18th century the European presence is stabilised in the two Americas forming the colonial system that is composed of imperial rivalries (from wars to smuggling and piracy), of displacements also forced (slavery) of population, of diffusion of different religions and knowledge, of production and circulation of goods (the plantations) and of economic exchanges in the framework of the Atlantic Ocean that touches three continents. The course aims to analyse this reality and its concluding phase in the second half of the 18th century in which new social frameworks were formed (the Creoles) and independence movements developed from the United States to Haiti and Latin America.

More information

The course takes place in the first semester. The program is the same for non-attendant students. In case of any problem with the texts, it is possible to contact the professor during the reception time or by mail (giovanni.pizzorusso@unich.it).
For exam preparation purposes, knowledge of the topics covered in the course lectures is also very useful. The use of a good geographical or historical-geographical atlas is recommended for exact location of events. Grant materials may be provided during the course. For frequent attendees only (i.e., students who have taken the course continuously and not just occasionally), a paper on a monographic volume (the list will be provided during the course) is expected to be written and presented in the classroom, allowing only the two mandatory volumes to be taken in the exam.
For NON-attending students, there is no textbook addition, but they should contact the professor to confirm the syllabus via email: giovanni.pizzorusso@unich.it.
Erasmus students who need English-language assistance regarding the exam or would like to prepare for the exam on English-language texts may contact the professor via email: giovanni.pizzorusso@gmail.com.
